Gesta Hammaburgensis ecclesiae pontificum

Gesta Hammaburgensis ecclesiae pontificum is a historical treatise written between 1075 and 1080 by Adam of Bremen. It covers the period from 788 to the time it was written. The treatise consist of:

- Descriptio insularum aquilonis (A description of the northern islands)
- M. Adami epilogus ad liemarum episcopum
Importance
The manuscript is one of the most important sources of the early Northern German and Scandinavian history and geography. It covers the relations between Saxons, Wendians and Danes.[citation needed]
The fourth book describes the geography of Scandinavia and the baltic regions as well as Iceland, Greenland and Vinland (North America), being the oldest book mentioning (in chapter 38) a part of the North American continent.
