Freebasing or Free-basing is the vapourisation of the freebase form of a number of drugs. Freebasing is done by drug users to increase the impact (euphoria, speed of onset, subjective and objective "rush" and "bang", general stimulation, or other effects) of the drug and/or economise the use of the drug on hand by allowing it to be smoked yet not destroying a significant percentage of the active agent by pyrolysis.

Preparation of the free base of a particular drug is achieved by either modifying a drug in salt form by various acid-base or chromatographic methods or by not turning it into a salt to begin with. Examples of the former include freebasing cocaine, cooking crack, and using chemicals to obtain codeine, dihydrocodeine, or morphine free base from medicinally used salts for smoking/vapourisation. The latter case involves such items as the morphine paste which is an intermediate in the manufacture of morphine and heroin (the paste is known as Heroin Nº 2 or Heroin Nº 3)
