English: The Empire Windrush - used by the British Military to transport troops just prior to the Suez Crisis this ship was also used to transport families to the UK. Photographed in 1949 by Michael A. W. Griffin, his family give permission for the reproduction of this photo on this site. Of interest may be that the journey from the Uk to the Far East took six weeks.
Note: It is not possible for this photo to have been taken in 1949 as a picture postcard version of the same photo exists with a postmark of 7 Aug 1948 when it was sent by a member of HM Forces about to depart on the Empire Windrush from Southampton to Malaya. Equally, the statement under File History (below) that it was taken in 1956 is also impossible both for the reason stated above and the fact that the ship sank in 1954. For the same reason, the ship cannot have been used just prior to the Suez Crisis as that also occurred two years after it sank.
