Text of patent:

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that we, M.Klein and Henry W. Wynne, both of Keokuk, in the State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fountain-Pens; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accomanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked theron, in which—

Figure 1 is a longituninal sectional view of a fountain-pen, with our improvement.

This invention consists of forming an ink-chamber A in the handle or holder, together with an arrangement of parts to supply the ink to the pen-point K, for use as wanted.

The whole is made as shoen in the drawings. At the top of the ink-chamber A is made a small entrance, C, for the air. There is a valve, B, held by a spring, D, to close this entrance C. On the lower part of the holder is a projecting part, F. This part F is the bent end of a rod, E, which passes along through a small tube, G, enclosed in the body of the holder, and connects with the spring D, so that, by pushing the part F up with the finger, the spring D and valve B will be raise, and allow the air to enter the ink-chamber A by the hole C, which will permit the ink to flow through a very small hole or tube, I, on to the pen-point K for use, when, by releasing the part F, the spring D will force the valve B on to the opening C, so asto close it, which will cause the pressure of the atmosphere to restrain the ink from flowing through the hole or tube I. The shield part L assists to hold a supply of ink under the pen-point K. The cap M covers and protects the valve B and accompanying parts. The part H, forming the lower part of the ink-chamber A, can be taken off, when the ink can be poured into the chamber A by inverting it.

This arrangement can be used to supply ink to drawing-pens, by substituting them for the pen-point K and sheild L.

What we claim is—

  1. The air-opening C, which the spring-valve B D at the top of the ink-chamber A, as and for the purpose specified.
  2. The rod F E, to raise the air-valve B, with its enclosed passage-way G, substantially as specified.
