English: In the splendid letter E, the Magi surrounding the Virgin are inspired from Italian works. The broken column of green marble symbolizes the end of paganism. While the painter shows his talent in the rendering of space, light and volumes, the presence of a fly painted in trompe l'oeil on the trunk of the tree testifies to his erudition: this illusionist detail is a quotation of Giotto's famous fly, which he would have placed on the nose of a figure painted by Cimabue, his master, who would have vainly tried to chase it away.
