In the Santa Mesa district are the houses ofwealthy Filipinos. These are usually of two stories, with the upper story projecting far over the lower, and with many ornamental dormer windows, withcasement sashes of small pieces of translucent shell. In Manila the window is provided to keep out themidday heat and glare of the sun. At other timesthe windows are slid into the walls, and thus nearlythe whole side of the house is open to the cool nightair. Many of these houses are finished in the finesthardwoods, and not a few have polished mahoganyfloors. Bamboo and rattan furniture may be seen insome of these houses, while in others are dressersand wardrobes in the rich native woods.
