Article

Stingray (1964 TV series)

Portion used

Whole frames to avoid misrepresenting the series and its design elements

Low resolution?

Yes, resolution greatly reduced from original presentation

Purpose of use

To demonstrate some of the techniques used to make the series' ocean surface and underwater sequences appear more realistic. The effects of these techniques are not adequately conveyed to the reader's imagination through words alone, so inclusion of this image greatly increases the reader's understanding of the topic.

Top: surface shot filmed on dyed water in a tank with a low back wall to create an artificial horizon, concealing the boundary between the tank and the painted-sky backdrop (similar in principle to an infinity pool).

Bottom: underwater scene filmed "dry" with a thin aquarium placed between the camera and the set to give the footage an authentic murky look. Small fish added to create false perspective (top-left). Fans blowing air across the set to make the hair and clothing of the Marina puppet appear to move with the underwater currents (top-right).

Replaceable?

No free-use alternatives available or suitable as Stingray and all of its elements are copyrighted and attempting to re-create these images through e.g. amateur model-making would misrepresent the series and its design elements.

Other information

Stingray produced by AP Films for ITC Entertainment between 1963 and 1964.
