Summary
[edit]Description | Picture of May Stevens' painting SoHo Women Artists (1977-1978) at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C., in 2023. A large figurative painting depicting a group of women artists living and working in Soho, New York, including Louise Bourgeois, Sarah Charlesworth, Harmony Hammond, Lucy R. Lippard, Miriam Schapiro, along with members of their community. Most of the figures are centered together, talking in a group, with one woman sitting on the floor with her child. Two male figures are seated in the back left, members of the local Italian-American community, along with an older woman sitting in front of them, the owner of a local bakery. Bourgeois, in the center, is painted in one of her wearable fabric sculptures, while Charlesworth, on the right of the group, is arriving on a bicycle. The figures are set against a deep blue background, with several partly-hidden decorative elements visible in the back right, including a wall of text in Latin hidden by a floral embroidered curtain or dress, and an American flag draped over a barely-visible male figure looking into the painting from the right. |
