Description
English: Painting by George Hendrik Breitner (1857-1923) of the sculptress Elisabeth Sara Clasina de Swart (1861-1951). She became famous as the “Muse of the Tachtigers” – the Eighties Movement of artists and writers. The poet Willem Kloos fell passionately in love with her, as did the young painter Eduard Karsen. Sara de Swart’s work consists mainly of small bronze sculptures that betray the influence of the French sculptor Auguste Rodin. From 1908 onwards De Swart made frequent journeys to Indonesia, together with the painter Emilie van Kerckhoff. In 1918 they settled on the Italian island of Capri.
