English: There can't be many bridges which go over another bridge, at least not in this way.
The lower bridge was the original, but it resulted in a steep gradient for the trains going to Rudgwick station. On inspection the Board of Trade decided it was too steep and the railway company had to relay their line. Embankments were raised, the gradient lowered and the new iron girder bridge was placed over the line - the original brick arch acting as a flying buttress.
