English: Medieval reliquary head of St Eustace from the cathedral at Basle, Switzerland. Inside were stored the relics of various saints and nine unlabelled fragments of skull, believed to have been relics of the head of St Eustace. This image shows the inner sycamore wood case holding the relics; it was enclosed by a silver-gilt cover decorated with recycled Roman glass and gems (see Reliquary head st eustace british museum). The wooden head and the relics inside it were only discovered when the outer silver case was being cleaned in 1956. The relics were returned to Basle. Circa 1180-1200.
