Summary
[edit]Lavatera Arborea, the Tree Mallow
Source:
- Baxter, William. (1835.) "British Phaenogamous Botany, or, Figures and Descriptions of the Genera of British Flowering Plants, vol. II." Self-published: Oxford. Archive via Google.
Key to the numbered plant parts: "Fig. 1. Outer Calyx or Involucrum. — Fig. 2. Outer and Inner Calyx with Stamens and Pistils. — Fig. 3. Cylindrical Tube formed by the union of the numerous filaments. — Fig. 4. Germen, Style, and Stigmas. — Fig. 5. Outer and inner Calyx, and Germen. — Fig. 6. A whorl of Capsules. — Fig. 7. A Seed."
This is a cropped/straightened capture of an image I created from a Google Book Search archive of an 1835 book self-published in London. The original image in the book is believed to be public domain because UK copyright law does not protect works of that age. Google's scan of the image is believed to be public domain because they explicitly allow unlimited use of their public domain works, with the request (not requirement) to maintain attribution. I also release my own trivial modification (crop & save) to the public domain.
From Google Book Search Help Center:
- "How can I reuse public domain works? Your imagination is the limit. We hope that people of all ages read these books and find other creative uses for them. Each book in our index arrived there after a careful process of preservation by our library partners and our own specialists. We do ask that you maintain the attribution to Google to help those who seek the source of a book or want to find it in a library."
Licensing
[edit]This image is in the public domain because under the Copyright law of the United States, originality of expression is necessary for copyright protection, and a mere photograph of an out-of-copyright two-dimensional work may not be protected under American copyright law. The official position of the Wikimedia Foundation is that all reproductions of public domain works should be considered to be in the public domain regardless of their country of origin (even in countries where mere labor is enough to make a reproduction eligible for protection). | ||||
