Summary

Description
English: Sir Hereward Wake, was descended from a long line of Baronets, allegedly descended from the original Hereward the Wake, the Saxon hero who rebelled against William the Conquerer in the 11th century. Sir Hereward was the 13th baronet, born in 1876 and died in 1963. The photo shows him as a young captain. He served on Lord Roberts' staff in the Boer War and was Adjutant of the 4th Battalion from 1903 to 1906. As a Major-General he was appointed Colonel of the 1st Battalion throughout World War 2.

The family home is Courteenhall where his son the present Sir Hereward Wake lives. He is the 14th baronet and was also an officer in the KRRC, winning the MC in World War 2.

The date and author of this photograph are unknown, but Wake was appointed to the supernumerary rank of captain before 6 December 1902 and was awarded the regimental rank of captain on 22 December 1908. By 1914 he held the rank of major. Therefore this photo dates to between 1902 and 1914.
