Summary

Description
English: The union coat of arms was the result of Norwegian demands for symbols that confirmed the equality of both states in the union between Sweden and Norway established in 1814. A committee with members from both countries convened in 1839 and agreed on new Union flags and arms. This design has en escutcheon with equal fields for both countries but the Swedish to the heraldic right. The inescutcheon has the arms of Bernadotte. Two crowns symbolize two separate and equal kingdoms under one king. It was approved by king Oscar I in council on 20 June 1844.
