English: The Chadar Trek serves as a historic trade route and the sole connection for remote villages in the Zanskar valley to the outside world during winter. This trek occurs from January to February when the Zanskar River solidifies into a thick sheet of ice known as the Chadar. Spanning approximately 105 kilometers, it requires around 9 days to complete. The journey begins at Chilling, a village near Leh, and concludes at Naerak, within the Zanskar Valley. Trekkers are treated to the breathtaking landscapes of the Zanskar Gorge, frozen waterfalls, ice caves, and snow-covered peaks along the route. The Zanskari people transport goods using homemade wooden sleds over the icy river and occasionally must spend nights in caves.
