Français : A partir du 18e siècle, les savants européens classent et hiérarchisent les populations humaines selon leurs caractéristiques physiques, en premier lieu selon la couleur de la peau. Cette division par « races »*, qui s’accentue au 19e siècle, met systématiquement en avant la supériorité de la « race » blanche et vise à justifier la domination exercée par les Européens, dans le cadre de la colonisation, sur des peuples étrangers jugés inférieurs. Dans son Physikalischer Atlas, le géographe allemand Heinrich Berghaus distingue six « races » : blanche (Caucasiens), jaune (Mongols), brune (Malais), brune noire (Papous notamment), noire (Ethiopiens ou « Nègres ») et rouge (Américains). Autour du planisphère qui indique leur répartition spatiale, est représentée une partie des peuples qui les composent. Les six crânes figurés rappellent que les théories raciales prirent appui sur l’anatomie comparée. Le petit planisphère met en évidence la distribution des principaux régimes alimentaires et celle de la population mondiale, en faisant ressortir le poids démographique de l’ouest de l’Europe. Parmi les graphiques qui figurent en bas de page, l’un compare la taille des êtres humains selon leur appartenance ethnique, un autre leur force. Tous deux placent les Occidentaux en tête de classement.
