Summary
| Description |
English: In the foreground: A segment of the walls of Anavarza’s upper city (on top of the mountain ridge). Byzantine-Armenian work (but predominantly Armenian) from the 12th and 13th centuries.
They enclosed a space called ‘basse cour’ (French for ‘Lower courtyard’, meaning the outer bailey), which measures about 370 x 210 m. In the background: The inner fortress (or keep) lies to the north, is about 270 x 60 m large and is separated from the outer bailey by a ravine, that was defended by an impressive bastion. One of a series of pictures taken during a visit from end to end. The location is imported later, and only at some pictures, I use the centre of a picture as the spot to locate, and not the spot where a picture was taken (the more usual method). Descriptions are based on sources such as: ‘Guides Bleus: Turquie’ – Edition 1986 , ‘Guide Fodor: Turquie’ - Edition 1988 & Personal Visits (by a correspondent of the author in 1985-1999). |
