The Penang Airport station is a future elevated light rail transit station on the Mutiara line in George Town, Penang. It will be situated between the Penang International Airport and a proposed Mitsui outlet mall.[1]

As of January 2025, discussions were ongoing between Mass Rapid Transit Corporation, the developer of the LRT line, and Malaysia Airports to coordinate the station's construction with a concurrent expansion of the airport.[1] The station is expected to be completed by 2031, in line with the completion of the Mutiara line.[2] The construction of the line is expected to provide a fast and direct transit between George Town's city centre towards the airport.[3][4]

History

[edit]

The Penang International Airport is the primary airport serving Penang, and among the busiest airports in Malaysia.[5]

In 2015, the station was identified as the southern terminus of a 17.5 kilometres (10.9 mi) light rail transit line between the Penang International Airport and Komtar.[6][7] However, subsequent redesigns extended the line to 26–29 kilometres (16–18 mi) with the southern terminus ending at Silicon Island south of the airport.[8][9][10]

In 2019, for approval of the light rail transit line by the Land Public Transport Agency, the statutory body concerning public transport in Malaysia, the Penang state government was required to discuss with Malaysia Airports regarding the alignment and proximity of the station from the Penang International Airport.[11] Further discussions took place between the developer of the LRT line Mass Rapid Transit Corporation and Malaysia Airports as of January 2025 to synchronise the construction of the station with the concurrent expansion of the airport.[1]
