It is located in the north of the republic. The area of the district is 829.58 square kilometers (320.30 sq mi).[citation needed] Its administrative center is the town of Baksan (which is not administratively a part of the district).[1] Population: 60,970 (2010 Census);[2] 114,888 (2002 Census);[5] 96,259 (1989 Soviet census).[6]

Administrative and municipal status

Within the framework of administrative divisions, Baksansky District is one of the ten in the republic.[1] The town of Baksan serves as its administrative center, despite being incorporated separately as a town of republic significance—an administrative unit with the status equal to that of the districts.[1]

As a municipal division, the district is incorporated as Baksansky Municipal District.[3] The town of republic significance of Baksan is incorporated separately from the district as Baksan Urban Okrug.[3]
