Summary
This anime was directed by Isao Takahata. He almost made this work an animated cartoon according to the original though previous 2 works (Heidi, Girl of the Alps, 3000 Leagues in Search of Mother) were dramatized largely. Scene setting and Layout were Hayao Miyazaki continuously to the former work 3000 Leagues in Search of Mother (though he left the production and Nippon Animation after the first 15 episodes). He began to feel the difference of the idea for making of the animation with Takahata who stuck to the controlled realistic acting at the time related to the former work. Therefore he had already thought work with Takahata was stopped, but it was unplanned for him to have become independent on the way in the season of this work. And, Yoshifumi Kondo (近藤喜文) was selected for Character design and Animation director instead of Yoichi Kotabe (小田部羊一) who had stopped work with Takahata a little early in former work 3000 Leagues in Search of Mother. Afterwards, Grave of the Fireflies and Only Yesterday etc. worked with Takahata as for him.
