The Amsterdam Marathon is an annual marathon race over the classic distance of 42.195km held in Amsterdam, The Netherlands since 1975. It has taken place in October since the 24th edition in 1999, and has attracted many top athletes from around the world since the late 1990s, when the organizers chose a new, flatter course. It is one of the top ten marathons in the world.[1] The event is the second largest marathon in the Netherlands, after the Rotterdam Marathon.

History

The first marathon in Amsterdam was during the 1928 Summer Olympics. It was won by Boughera El Ouafi.

Modern Amsterdam Marathon

The modern Amsterdam Marathon started in 1975.

Route

The route starts and finishes in the Olympic Stadium. The course is flat, with a maximum elevation of 33ft at the 23rd mile.[2]
