On March 13, 2023, a pickup truck hit eleven pedestrians in Amqui, Quebec, Canada, killing two and injuring nine.[1][2] A male driver attempted to flee the scene but was arrested.[3] Police described the incident as premeditated and deliberate.[4][5]
Incident
The incident happened around 3:00 p.m. EST in Amqui, a town 350 kilometers (220 miles) northeast of Quebec City in Canada.[6] A code orange was declared at the Amqui hospital, which indicates a high casualty incident.[7] A witness said victims were spread over hundreds of metres.[8]
Nine people were injured in the incident, including a baby and a toddler. Three victims remain in the hospital under critical condition.[4]
Accused
The accused, Steeve Gagnon, 38,[9] turned himself into the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) after attempting to flee the scene.[3] Police, who said that he is from the area, arrested him for a hit and run causing death.[8] He is facing two charges for dangerous driving causing death.[10]
Gagnon entered no plea. His next court appearance is to be scheduled on April 5. He remains in police custody.[9]
Reactions
Premier François Legault offered his support to residents of Amqui after conversing with the town's mayor.[11]
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also expressed his concern to the town, stating "My heart is with the people of Amqui, Quebec today. As we learn more about the tragic events that have taken place, I’m keeping everyone affected in my thoughts."[11]
