On 12 December 2022, militants attacked a hotel in Kabul, Afghanistan.[1] The attack at the Kabul Longan Hotel, a hotel popular with foreign tourists[2], resulted in at least three civilians dead and 18 others injured. Two foreigners are reported to be among those injured.[3][4]

Background

The day prior to the attack, Chinese ambassador to Afghanistan Wang Yu met Afghan Deputy Foreign minister Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanikzai to discuss security matters, and called on the Taliban “to pay more attention to the security of the Chinese Embassy in Kabul.”[3][5]

A week before, gunmen attacked the Pakistani ambassador at his embassy compound in Kabul, wounding a Pakistani guard, whilst in September a suicide bomber blew himself up outside the Russian Embassy in Kabul, killing two Russian diplomats.[5]

Attack

Around 14:30 local time, the attack took place.[3] Residents reported hearing a powerful explosion followed by gunfire.[3] Islamic State-Khorasan Province claimed responsibility for the attack.[6]

Victims

Three people were killed and 18 injured.[3][7] Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mojahid confirmed the attack ended with all three gunmen killed, and hotel guests were safely evacuated.[7]

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said that five Chinese nationals were amongst the injured.[7][8]
