Wikipedia:WikiProject Canada Roads/Ontario/Infobox

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

All articles covering roads in Ontario should use {{Infobox road}} to give a quick overview of the road. The infobox should always include:

  • The type of route
  • The number (if any) of the route
    • The name when there is no number
  • The length - Do not source thekingshighway.ca, source the MTO's AADT data instead for provincial highways. Source an atlas/google maps when nothing reliable is available
  • The directions of the termini for the highway.
  • The termini of the highway. Highways start from the southernmost terminus on a north-south highway, and the westernmost terminus on an east-west route. All items on the article should cover the route from south to north or from west to east
  • Major junctions between those two points. Avoid using more than 10 at all costs. If you find yourself exceeding that, list only freeway junctions

The remaining information is optional, but should be found if at all possible.

The Marker

The highway marker, if one exists, will usually be found by the template and used. In the event it does not, only then should you begin using the customized options. Trans Canada routes should have File:Trans-Canada Highway shield.svg to the right of the route marker, and both should be set to 54px in size.

Explanation of all parameters

[edit]
  • |header_type= a value for this control what colour the header bars are used in the infobox. Values include "freeway", for roads that are freeways for their entire length; "historic" ("historical", "hist") for roads of a historic nature, such as auto trails or highways posted with brown, historical signage; and "under construction" ("const", "uc"), for roads where construction has begun on the highway and no sections have been opened to traffic. Do not use the last type for roads that are open to traffic in some capacity.
  • |province= the two-letter postal abbreviation. For Ontario, use "ON".
  • |type= the type of roadway. For highways, use "hwy"
  • |route= the route number, the Queen Elizabeth Way can be entered as QEW.
  • |map= enter the file name of a map of the route, without the File:.
  • |map_notes= enter the caption for the map here.
  • |map_alt= enter the alt text for the map here.
  • |county= the county associated with the route that the article is about. Use only for county routes.
  • |spur_type= defines the type of route that the route is a spur of. Use for spur routes, such as a loop road, bypass, alternate route, business route, truck route, or other type of route. Example: Use hwy for Ontario Highway 7A
  • |spur_of= defines what the parent route is, such as Highway 7A's parent is Highway 7. The usual text that would go here is the road number, such as "7".
  • |name= overrides the default road name (large bold text below marker). The template will usually automatically determine the correct name for highways and roads using the type, route (and county/region/city parameter in the case of roads). However, when it doesn't seem to be using the proper name, you can override it with a value here.
  • |alternate_name= use this for alternate or local names if there is such a name to the whole road. They will be displayed below the name in small text.
  • |maint= use this to enter who maintains the route. Highways are maintained by the MTO, county roads are generally maintained by their county Works Department, and expressways/streets are generally maintained by the municipality they reside in. The template will automatically fill this in for highways, but it may have errors. Use this parameter to override it. The "Maintained by the " text will always appear.
  • |length_km= enter the full length of the route in kilometers here (just a number). The template will automatically display miles as well.
  • |length_ref= enter the reference for the length here, including the ref tags.
  • |length_note= enter notes here. Useful for displaying the former length of provincial highways mostly downloaded to municipalities, or other information pertaining to the length.
  • |established= enter the year or date that the route was designated with its current number (even if the municipality name has changed, if the route number has remained consistent, use the earliest date possible). If used alone, the output will be appended with "– present"
  • |decommissioned= if the route no longer exists at all, enter the date it was decommissioned here. The output will be appended after the value for established with an en dash (–) to separate them.
  • |history= this line is useful for customized dates.
  • |direction_a= the cardinal direction of the first terminus listed in the infobox. This is usually the "South" or "West" terminus.
  • |terminus_a= the first terminus for the route.
  • |junction= enter major junctions here, separated by a line break (<br/>), they will appear between the terminii. Again, {{jcon}} comes in useful here.
  • |direction_b= the opposite direction of direction_a.
  • |terminus_b= the opposite terminus of terminus_a.
  • |cities= enter the city or cities encountered along the route.
  • |towns= enter the town or towns encountered along the route.
  • |counties= (or regions= or districts=) enter the county for a county / regional / district road, or for freeways / highways that only encounter a single region / county / district.
  • |divisions= use this if a route crosses between counties / regions / districts
  • |browse= enter a custom browser template here.
  • |previous_type= enter the type for the previous route in the browser here.
  • |previous_route= enter the previous route's number here.
  • |next_type= enter the type for the next route.
  • |next_route= enter the next route's number here.
