Redirect loop

Hi Steve
I noticed my talk page flicker, so I thought I'd give you an explanation. I initially wrote that loop for demonstration at WP:Village pump (proposals)/Archive 44#Double redirects. I've kept the loop up since that discussion is also linked from an open bugzilla request (bugzilla:17888). I'm not particularly attached to it with the VPR thread long archived, so if it's giving you a headache I can disable them, however proper exclusion-compliant bots will of course notice that the all pages of the loop use {{nobots}} and should just ignore them anyway. I'm not seeing a link from your user page to your bot, what bot framework are you using? Or is it something homebrewn?

I'm trying to use redirect.py to fix double redirects. My bot is here, and uses pywikipedia. I would have assumed this was exclusion compliant, but since I didn't write the code, I'm not sure. If you could disable the pages for the time being, that would be great. And sorry for the frustrated post to your talk page, I was a little irritated that I couldn't bypass the page, but it was more my fault than anything. It doesn't look like it, no. In my opinion, it shouldn't ever be used then. There have been cases where I deliberately caused a double redirect for a short while. Bots shouldn't be "fixing" them against a deliberate opt-out.
I notice that redirect.py does show you a diff before it performs the edit though, so shouldn't you notice the "{{nobots}}{{goaway}}" directly after the redirects, and can decide to skip it?

The problem with the code is, as soon as it detects the redirect loop, it crashes. It doesn't give me an option to skip the redirect. If I could, I gladly would, but I am afraid that the program will not let me. Steve Crossin The clock is ticking.... 12:31, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

Question about your bot

I am interested in getting all Season article pictures into the Image Category. Do we first have to place the {{WikiProject 24}} onto the file's discussion page to get it into the Category? Sorry, must edit. There indeed exists a Category:24 (TV series) images; however that is not the name that the statistics bot recognizes. Is there a way to get the images into the Category:Image-Class 24 articles so that the statistics bot may count them? Prapsnot (talk) 05:20, 5 July 2009 (UTC)

I am certainly going to have to find more work for you and your bot! I noticed that the Category:Image-Class 24 articles has jumped to include 39 articles! And the the statistics bot increased it's number substantially! Wiki code usually recognizes that a file is an Image, Template, Category, or Project automatically without setting a class as with File talk:24 Season 1 Cast.jpg for example. Also, I will have to try and find out how many FA and FL articles there are that the bot isn't counting too. Prapsnot (talk) 05:41, 5 July 2009 (UTC)
With regards to FA's and FL's, the bot isn't missing any. We only have the one FL, and no FA's at the moment. I'm trying to bring 24 (TV series) up to FA status, but it's got a long way to go before it even comes close. I found another problem for your bot! There are 10 articles that didn't get counted by the statistics bot because they are seemingly victims of wiki's new uppercase/lowercase sensitivity. One example is File:24 the game interrogation.jpg which has a lowercase "p" in the project name on the talk page. Can your bot find all such cases, and redo them? Like anything that has Wikiproject 24, maybe it can zap them so they show WikiProject 24? Prapsnot (talk) 05:54, 5 July 2009 (UTC)

New more specific request -- please ask your bot to
  • find all {{Wikiproject 24|class=Project}} on talk pages and change to {{WikiProject 24|class=Project}}.
  • find all {{Wikiproject 24|class=image}} and change to {{WikiProject 24|class=image}}.
  • find {{Wikiproject 24|class= |importance= }} change to {{WikiProject 24|class= |importance= }}.

One last caveat about your bot's work. Your bot has been adding a Category:WikiProject 24 articles to talk pages. But that page should not even exist. It was created by someone in February 2009, but the correct category is Category:WikiProject 24 created in April 2008. It is not necessary to add Category:WikiProject 24 to talk pages as the statistics bot will categorize pages into their, "Stub, FA, GA, etc.", classes automatically. Also, wiki can find Category:WikiProject 24 whenever someone manually upgrades/downgrades the class. I don't know whether a redirect or deletion is warranted? Well, no, it's not an oversight. That category, Category:WikiProject 24 articles, contains all the articles in the project, so it just serves as an easy link to all the articles, when I need to run a bot task. New request - based on your last post, I now understand how great it was to have that category! Could you ask your bot to find orphans? Like, pages that are listed in a category, but their discussion page does not exist, so the WP 1.0 bot can find them? We won't bother with any particular class, for now. That statistical chart I added to Wikipedia:WikiProject 24 isn't counting some articles. Please ask your bot to?

Mediation

I think you did a fine job with the mediation, so far as it went. As I said at the time, my problem was that the structure you created helped for a while but eventually the process stalled. We started spinning our wheels and writing thousands of words of discussion without making progress towards consensus. I think there's support for mediation. I don't know of any other objections to your mediation. I suppose a next step would be for one of the parties, like me, to make a request. Informal mediation may be better since the disputes are likely to be sprawling rather than clearly defined.   Will Beback  talk  05:25, 5 July 2009 (UTC)
Well, I have developed a more structured form of mediation, and I've thought of a better way to conduct mediation, so I'm willing to give it a shot if there are no objections. The thing I'd probably focus more on this time around would be active management of the case, as opposed to casual observation and moderation. Things need to be controlled a lot more, and I'd probably refactor off-topic comments if required. Also, you might want to keep an eye on this guy, Colton hockey11, he keeps adding the same reverted material over and over. First he cited IMDB, then a single blog comment. Nothing else, including the official cast list says Tony will be back for S8. --MiB-24 (talk) 04:10, 6 July 2009 (UTC)

Noted, however, the New York Post is pretty reliable. I spotted that editor editing a few hours ago, but because the material was cited to the NY Post, I left it. The problem is it is almost like the blog post is an off hand remark, without anything to back it up. Every press release for new castings that also list returning members do not mention Carlos Bernard. Without something official, either from Fox, a producer/writer/director, or Carlos himself, it is really just speculation.

Wanted to let to know that in attempting to revert an edit on the 24, the ClueBot marked it as vandalism. It was the same edit you've reverted before, a massive cast list being added to the page. --208.180.22.12 (talk) 14:33, 8 July 2009 (UTC)

Looks like we've got an edit war going between Alexisfan07 and 68.228.84.20 over the 24 Season 8 cast listings. They've been at it for days on 24 (season 8), 24 (TV series), and List of 24 cast members. The whole issue is whether or not Jennifer Westfeldt should be in the main cast or support cast. There seem to be conflicting articles, but the more recent, including a Fox press release, put her in the main cast. I hate to get into the middle yet another Wikipedia battle, but this one is getting ridiculous. --MiB-24 (talk) 04:48, 11 July 2009 (UTC)

Latest PR mediation

As per this I object to Momento being a part of this process. This is yet another attempt by him to create havok with these articles and push his POV. Since Rumiton has also been banned from editing the topic for a year, I'm not sure he should be included in this mediation either. Any input he would have in a year from now crafting the PR articles can certainly be dealt with at that time, and since he is unable to do anything before then, I see no reason to include him. It hardly seems reasonable to allow an editor who was banned for previous behaviour, and unable to contribute to the articles, to create policy that other editors should abide by. -- Maelefique (talk) 15:26, 22 July 2009 (UTC)

Anyway, let's get started. I'd like to know a bit about you, your interests, and why you chose to start editing Wikipedia. I'm Steve, I mainly edit articles related to 24, although of recent, I don't edit it much (I'm busy doing behind the scenes stuff like mediation.) I began editing Wikipedia because I wanted to add my knowledge to the site, and to help improve Wikipedia. (My first edit was actually fixing a typo). What do you like doing on Wikipedia? Also, what name do you generally go by on Wikipedia? After you've answered this, we will get started. If you could also let me know how much you know about Wikipedia, that would be great. To introduce myself, im Arun, 29, a psychiatrist for my sins, and i've been working on Wikipedia for a year or so now. I got into Wikipedia by chance, when I was looking at athletic records during a quiet night-shift at work - and noted there wasn't a progression page for the men's 200m. I ended up making the article (my first edit), and got the bug from there. Nevertheless I had been browsing Wikipedia for some time prior (it's a very accessible way to learn without having to actively look for a particular subject), and was interested in its concept. I enjoy editing Wikipedia, and consider it a timely resource that will ultimately hold much information that is likely to be lost through time.
My Userpage gives a gist of what i've been doing on Wikipedia, and i'm currently working on 19th century Scottish football clubs (which has led me to do some research on it).
Im hoping to use my skills to improve Wikipedia (mainly English, but possible also Simple English), and to also get involved with the behind the scenes stuff - I like to think my profession gives me some skills to contribute to this, plus I consider myself to be an impartial, conciliatory, and consistent individual during discussions (with a sense of humour of course!).
This is the only username I have ever gone by, bar possibly a couple of anonymous typos a long time ago. In terms of experience, I think i've got the hang of basic editing, and i'm getting my teeth into making templates now (though making tables and templates from scratch (i.e. without copy/pasting) is probably above me at the moment). I've got a basic idea of the workings behind Wikipedia, though have not been particularly active in it due to my inexperience with Wiki policy.
Otherwise, im a fairly down-to-earth type of guy, and enjoys pretty much anything. I'm mainly into sports of all kinds, gaming, and poker. Also keeping the wife off my back while i'm slaving over the computer editing some article about an inconspicuous football team from the back and beyond.

What you have given me somewhat gives me an idea on who you are, and what you like editing, as well as some things we could guide you into doing (perhaps train you up as a mediator). I have an adoption program that I put all my adoptee through. Some stuff you may know, some you may not, but a refresher can't hurt. Have a read of the lessons and let me know your thoughts. Was that for my comments on Jossi? He has NOTHING to do with Ted Patrick, and for Jayen to wave him around in some attempt to curry favour or invalidate a person Jossi's never known, frankly, is an attempt to invalidate the impartiality of RSN. What's good for the goose...I'm just trying to keep it equal. 24 Season 8 Cast

The edits regarding Logan, Mandy, and Tony you and I reverted today are being based on an interview at Comic-Con. It does not say the characters will return, it says they might return. So for now, it's just more fanboy speculation. Corrib Gas Articles

Hi Steve, you may or may not have noticed that I've started a clean up on the Corrib Gas articles as mentioned in the mediation. I'd appreciate if you could take a look at my edits and give inputs where ever you think is necessary. I'm trying to bring a bit of balance and cut down on undue weighting in articles not directly related to the topic as well as lessen the number of articles involved, pretty much as I've said in the medcab statement. Cheers, I'd appreciate if you would let me know if you think I've overstepepd the mark on any of these articles. I'm only now realising the scale of the task, these articles really are a mess! Am trying to find correct sources and updates for articles and then merge Corrib gas project, Corrib gas controversy and Policing the corrib gas protests into one article as they are all about essentially the same thing.
