Big Star

Hello, it seems that Big Star is scheduled to appear on the main page some time in the near future and I went through it just to make sure it's still up to par since the editor who nominated it for FA has not been around in a few years. Would you mind reviewing the changes I made and letting me know if you disagree with anything? I essentially removed any unsourced additions, consolidated and reorganized a few paragraphs, and updated a few sections that were still stuck on "as of 2015" type statements. MZ

Lwarrenwiki, I see that you reverted most of the changes I made to the "Machine Zone" Wiki page. Can I ask why you reverted my edits? The edits I made were to better accurately describe Machine Zone as a company and its products and services. • @Kenosplit: Thanks for contacting me about the revisions. I certainly appreciated the tone of your note – in my past experience, new editors who have seen their first edits to Wikipedia reverted are rarely so pleasant! You've made a good start. I hope the result will be a productive collaboration among Wikipedia's editors (including you!) to improve the accuracy and completeness of the Machine Zone article, while maintaining its integrity.

To that end: are you working for MZ, or for Rubenstein Associates, directly or indirectly? The apparently promotional nature of your changes caused me to think so, and so did the discovery that your revisions appeared to take place before MZ's April 4 announcement was reported in the press. When I located the actual press release on BusinessWire, your revisions were prior to the date and time of the press release. Please take a look at WP:PUBLICIST and WP:COI to see whether those guidelines might apply to you. Even if they do not, I would also suggest that you look at WP:PROMOTION and WP:NPOV, to see how you might be able to better avoid giving the Wikipedia article the appearance of a press release for MZ's new product. • @Lwarrenwiki: I do work at MZ and reviewed the articles you sent me. It was not my intention to promote the company but rather to reflect the company's current situation. There are, for example, several statements in the Wikipedia that are either outdated or inaccurate, but I did not change those as my intention was not to completely redo the Wiki page for the company. I would like, however, for at least the first paragraph describing the company to be as accurate as possible, which is to say, to reflect the fact that it is a real time technology company and not just a gaming company. Also, with the rebranding as "MZ," I see no reason why the Wiki can't reflect that rebranding even if in the background section there is reference to the fact that the company was once known as "Machine Zone." I think (and hope) that if you look back at the language I added that you will see that the intention was not to promote but rather to update facts about the company.

• @Kenosplit: Thanks for being forthcoming about your connection to the subject of the article. I think the goal of adding new and updated facts into the article – only after they've been independently reported by third-party sources – is a perfectly reasonable and achievable one. Edits by article subject

Hey, yes, I was trying to update discography items or whatever else looked suspect on the wiki page about myself. Which is weird, but after several people had told me at shows that they had read about me there, I thought I should check it out! I guess that's not good? I don't need to do it, of course. I rarely check in here. Was just looking today as I was contacted by a guy who wanted to know about my maternal grandfather's Ehrenfried Pfeiffer relationship with Sigurd Rascher the saxophonist, and was trying to figure out how he knew I was related. ~jesegel — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jesegel (talk • contribs) 12:35, 8 June 2016 (UTC)

@Jesegel: Thanks for responding to my note at Talk:Jonathan Segel#Connected contributor.

You wrote: "I guess that's not good?" Actually, I think it's very good that you want to keep the article updated and accurate. It's easy for anyone to look at the article's edit history and see that you've been making constructive edits going as far back as 2007, and it's been fine.

What I would suggest, though, is that it might be better (and also easier for you) if you'd suggest your changes by posting a message on the article's talk page, rather than directly editing the article yourself. There are plenty of experienced editors willing to help with that sort of thing, and by relying on them, you eliminate the conflict of interest (under Wikipedia's policies) that happens when someone edits a page about himself.

Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and so every article is supposed to be encyclopedic, dry, formal, written with a neutral point of view, and non-promotional. Your edits have been good about that, except for some from almost 10 years ago (e.g., comparing the misspelling of your name to Shakespeare's). Wikipedia editors really do try to enforce basic academic-type rules – for instance, articles must be factual, and they should include citations to reliable third-party sources for the facts. Clearly you are the person with the most accurate information about yourself, and there's some irony in the fact that (just as in academic writing) your own personal knowledge can't be cited as the source.

So, the message is this: please stick around, check in often, and definitely don't let me discourage you from participating and improving the article whenever you think it needs updates or corrections. Just post your edit requests at the bottom of Talk:Jonathan Segel, and seriously, they will quickly be seen by Wikipedians who probably can get it done for you. I don't know who's considering what, but as I stated, the account can't be unblocked without my approval. The only reason I reverted was because the unblock request wasn't posted by the account but by an IP, and that's impermissible. It's not necessary to send me the evidence you spoke of. • @Rhythmofyouth: You didn't say it. Wikipedia did. Wikipedia says that you can't just invent stuff and add it to an article.

• I'll be improving or cleaning up problems with MWH articles as I find them, when I have time. But I'd really appreciate it if you would provide references for the unsourced material you keep adding. If you're getting your facts from a reliable source, please provide the citations to those references, so everyone can look them up. If you're getting them from unpublished sources, it doesn't matter if you got them from Ivan himself – or even if you are Ivan or someone who works for him – they're not suitable for inclusion on Wikipedia without a citation to a source, and as a general rule, that's got to be a reliable third-party source.
