Some anonymous flamer and my response
[edit]YOU BITCH! Why would you delete my page? Advertising? Get bent! Look at all other ISP article you knob. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Tgraham87 (talk • contribs)
Thanks for taking the time to talk to me, and a second thanks for (mostly) ensuring correct grammar in your post. To answer your question, I noticed that the second part of Beagle Internet used possessive "we" instead of the more neutral "they" or "Beagle Internet" which led me to believe it was posted by an advertiser. However, it appears that I was wrong. The "we" was in there because at least a section of that article was copied in violation of copyright, and the decision to delete it was Speedied, as Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Beagle_Internet will show. Also, please take the time to sign your comments by typing four tildes (~) after your post, as that will allow me to identify you and respond on your talk page, instead of my own. Thanks for caring, - CorbinSimpson 08:09, 23 December 2005 (UTC)
LOL! You're a better man than I am, Gunga Din. :) - Lucky 6.9 08:33, 23 December 2005 (UTC)
- What's wonderful about this is the blatant use of bad grammar in (is it 'in' or 'on'?) your own page! "and a second thanks for (mostly) ensuring correct grammar in your post."In the context you have used 'ensuring', it makes no sense, as the defition is: 'to make sure that something will happen', which of course refers to an event or action. therefore, you can not ensure correct grammar, however you can ensure that correct grammer is used. --Alex 02:25, 18 March 2006 (UTC)
- That's life. Any comment critical of a particular instance of bad spelling or grammar is karmically guaranteed to be misspelled or grammatically incorrect. - CorbinSimpson 10:00, 19 March 2006 (UTC)

db-band
[edit]Yo. Regarding Tuff boxx, I just thought it might be helpful to you to know that as of a few days ago, the template db-band can be used to speedy delete non-notable bands, under CSD A7. I relisted it to make some admin's life easier. No problem with the delete template, but I thought you'd find that useful. - CorbinSimpson 02:38, 7 January 2006 (UTC)
hey -- thanks for the notice; that definitely makes life easier. I start getting a little discouraged patrolling new pages because there's just so much junk... more speedy tags is a good start! bikeable (talk) 02:45, 7 January 2006 (UTC)
Question regarding the article "oceanic flight 815"
[edit]hi I read you requested the deletion of this page, my first question is why and my second is will you take another look at it now I've cleaned it up a bit and tell me what you think?
Thanks Jezabelda 23:57, 7 January 2006 (UTC)
Hi. Wow, it looks a lot nicer now, nice job cleaning it up. I originally requested deletion because of "fancruft" - that is, the page looked like it was made by a serious fan of Lost as a fan page, not an encyclopaedic entry. However, looking at it now, I think that I will change my vote. My suggestion to you is to take the source of your article and save it somewhere in case the vote goes to delete. I will vote for and suggest a move to Oceanic Flight 815. - CorbinSimpson 21:04, 7 January 2006 (UTC)
Yes you said it should be moved to "oceanic airlines flight 815" but as i only registered yesterday it will not allow me to move it to this destination, any suggestions? And I have save the entire article on my computer so if the article is deleted couldnt I just paste the saved article in a new page? Jezabelda 23:57, 7 January 2006 (UTC)
Traditionally, when an article is put up for deletion discussion, the article will be subject to debate and discussion, and should not be moved or deleted while the discussion takes place. I probably would be allowed to move it, and if the discussion does not end in delete, I will move it as soon as the page is closed. I could withdraw my nomination for deletion, but I will not because many other members of the community have brought up very good points that it would be remiss to dismiss. - CorbinSimpson 22:37, 7 January 2006 (UTC) (Oh, and by the way, use four tildes in a row, like "~~~~", to automatically insert a timestamp and your signature!)
ok, how come you wont remove your nomination? Did you move it to "Oceanic Flight 815"? When will I know if it has been deleted and if it is deleted can I simply paste the article back into wikipedia? Jezabelda 23:56, 7 January 2006 (UTC)
Another user, I think Blu Aardvark, moved it to Oceanic Flight 815. Keep working on it and improving it - it's starting to look as if it won't be deleted. My vote for deletion and nomination is pretty much withdrawn now...thank you for your hard work improving this article and making it encyclopaedic. - CorbinSimpson 00:33, 8 January 2006 (UTC)
Thanks so happy. One question though, you chose it to be deleted but how did you come across it in the first place I may be mistaken but you don't seem like a Lost fan
"I know what's under the hatch!" "Really? What?" "Yo momma, lol!" In all seriousness, I watch Special:Newpages in order to try and stem unnecessary articles. - CorbinSimpson 01:46, 8 January 2006 (UTC)
This may be an advertisement and inappropriate on Wikipedia. Nonetheless, that is not a criteria for speedy deletion. If you want to somehow devise a policy of speedy deletion of advertisements, I challenge you to write one and get it approved. But I think you'll find that things can be put up that look like advertisements that are rather the basis of articles that Wikipedia should have but doesn't yet. If you want this page deleted, do it right and put it up for AFD. If that is too much of a hassle, get a tool to help you do it. jnothman talk 07:50, 8 January 2006 (UTC)
Wow. You're right. I've speedied advertisements before, so I always assumed there was CSD or precedent for speedy on ads, but I went to CSD, and lo and behold, there is no CSD for ads! Heh, thanks. Sorry about that. - CorbinSimpson 07:53, 8 January 2006 (UTC)
YTMND Hacks ebaums forum, redirects to ytmnd.com (for a short time)
[edit]It happened, forum.ebaumsworld.com/ was hacked, and after the hack, the page was redirected to ytmnd.com/users/profile/24045 then a few minutes later redirected to the newest ytmnd entries, then it just pointed to ytmnd.com, then it Bauman intervened and changed the permissions on forum.ebaumsworld.com... shortly afterwards ytmnd.com was attacked with a dos attack and most clients connected to ytmnd's irc server (irc.ytmnd.com) pinged out. The attack was shortlived (about 10 minutes) Now, ebaums forum is backup... all seems calm... but this is the calm before the real storm
Visit here ebaumsforumshackedlol.ytmnd.com/ ytmnd hack for a victory screen shot... this isnt fake, it was hacked, I was there man! LOL XSS vunls or something from what I hear... they stole the users.cjb.net/ebaumcookies/noip.txt cookies or something? That last link doesnt work unless you paste it into your browser clicking it wont work!
Crazy. Do you have any other links that might be helpful or yield additional info? - CorbinSimpson 06:17, 9 January 2006 (UTC)
As stated in the discussion page, this hack did happen, look at the "Completion" comment. As someone who was there in the channel, I can confirm that was how it happened. Their forums were hacked and then brought down for about an hour and a half.
Drum machine
[edit]Moving electronic drumming to electronic drum was an excellent idea. In the drum machine article, however, I kind of liked how "trigger pads" was linked to electronic drumming and think it should now link to electronic drum. I think electronic drum is currently the best destination for a "trigger pad" link. Granted, it is not ideal, but the trigger article is just a disambiguation page masquerading as an article. If someone wrote a trigger pad article, that would, of course, be ideal. What do you think? --Trweiss 04:40, 20 January 2006 (UTC)
Hmm, sounds like a good plan. Indeed, it would be nice if there were a more technical page for drum triggers and triggers in general. It would also be nice if trigger and the disambiguation connnected to it were merged, but that's a topic for another day. Anyways, feel free to change that link. It's there in the hopes that the trigger article will at some point become the correct thing to point to, but barring that, I don't see why it can't be changed. - CorbinSimpson 04:51, 20 January 2006 (UTC)
Planet Math project
[edit]Thank you for help with Wikipedia:WikiProject Mathematics/PlanetMath Exchange. And one small request. It is good if you follow existing guidelines for reporting the status of an article, and sign under it. In that way we know how many articles got reviewed, and that data will appear in the tables you see at Wikipedia:WikiProject Mathematics/PlanetMath Exchange. So I would like to ask you to go back to Wikipedia:WikiProject Mathematics/PlanetMath Exchange/94-XX Information and communication, circuits and modify the status line at Hartley function and its derivation. You can see an example of how to do that at Wikipedia:WikiProject Mathematics/PlanetMath Exchange/12-XX Field theory and polynomials. Thanks again for your help. Rolling Stones
[edit]Just to let you know, don't add the list back to the Rolling Stones article. I'm the original creator of the article, and had added the list. But with ample precedent, Wikipedia strictly forbids lists from other sources to be listed on Wikipedia. If you add the list, it will be deleted. I just wanted to let you know before you went through all the trouble of recreating it.--Esprit15d 13:33, 27 February 2006 (UTC)

(No clue where you saw it : P) I don't know what I did, I went tough, but I was fair, and he was out of line. He responded to grammar complaints as "something to worry about when up for feature". He also told me not review anything else. I'm really depressed, I feel like I'm useless, Thank you Highway 21:21, 29 March 2006 (UTC)
- Thank you for attempting to fix the line in the Torchic intro (god knows how it wasn't fixed, I've had about three fact checks!) It generally means that the 3rd generation (including Torchic) has a more animal-type appearance than anthropormostic (like humans). An exmaple of this is the difference between Butterfree and Beautifly. Highway 21:29, 29 March 2006 (UTC)
- No worries. I'm evaluating Queen (band) right now for GA status. I'm going to be honest, and he's going to have to deal with it. - CorbinSimpson 21:44, 29 March 2006 (UTC)
- Thank you, can I just ask, were there any core faults with my evaluation? Because I actually enjoy reviewing them (I have no idea why I'm listening to him.. but he's the fear of Zeus in me :P) Much thanks, Highway 21:47, 29 March 2006 (UTC)
- As usual, CP says it best. All I have to add is this: Cheer up. Just because someone violates WP:ATTACK doesn't mean you have to take it to heart — just keep on working and writing what you want to say, and let people listen to your opinion. Okay? - CorbinSimpson 22:14, 29 March 2006 (UTC)
- Thank you so much. I'm feeling much better now Corbin, I hope I can in anything you're having a problem with, just ask ; ). I've also started an archive of the nominations, so I can keep myself in check : P Highway 22:17, 29 March 2006 (UTC)
Question about failure of Queen article
[edit]- You criticized it for being "nowhere near the level expected of a featured article." But isn't that missing the point? A good article isn't the same as a featured article. I think your standards are too rigorous. And concerning the language of the article, I would argue that contractions and parenthesis help readability, as, even though articles are suppossed to written as encyclopedic as possible, making an article (especially one as large as Queen's) filled with dense, turgid, boring prose seems like a bad idea to me. I would like to argue this further with you, perhaps on Insant Messanger or the like. Contact me at TheImpossibleMan on AIM, IM, or whatever. TheImpossibleMan 23:48, 29 March 2006 (UTC)
- Articles in the Main namespace are expected to be "brilliant prose," not simply boring words on the page. I would say that as an encyclopedia, the most important aspect of any article is the arrangement and selection of the words with which we express information. If we write informally, we become an informal source of information. If we elevate our diction, we become an exemplary source, a shining beacon of information and authority through which we share our knowledge. However, the elements of style which we have in our hands, namely voice, word choice, phrasing, and presentation, do not have to present a boring article. Indeed, we want to present an amazingly well-written article that is easy and pleasurable to read, as well as unambiguous identifying the information which it presents.
- Secondly, the Good Article and Featured Article processes are two very different systems meant for two different purposes. Good Article Evaluation and Status is meant to be an extreme form of peer review: One Wikipedian, who is not at all connected with the article, evaluates it on an impartial scale, seeing if it meets his personal expectations for what an article should look like. The result is an in-depth look at what one Wikipedian thinks of the article.
- However, Featured Article Status denotes a community who, having examined the article, consider it a good example of both their own handiwork and also the expectation that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia. Since it is a communal process, it is not graded or scored on a rubric, but instead is discussed and analyzed via discussion. The resulting article, once qualified, is fit to be put on the Main Page.
- It is sad indeed that the two processes are often linked. They are meant to be different simply by their nature. Nonetheless, I do not feel as if I should have to retract or discuss my grading: I carefully weighed my words, and meant every single one of them. I would, however, like to remind you that I am a Grammar Nazi, and as such have a history of pedantically singling out large numbers of small problems in order to justify a complaint. I have a feeling that with a bit of work, Queen (band) will quite easily make Featured Article Status. Please don't take my words as a personal insult — you have done quite well with the article. It is one of the better articles in the encyclopedia. Never have I nominated any page authored by myself for Good Article or Featured Article Status — I am not foolish enough to hope that any of them will qualify. If you would like, I can examine and attempt to correct grammatical and Manual of Style-related problems with Queen (band). I bear you no ill will, but I do not slant towards you either. It is necessary, if we are to produce neutrally honest prose, that we be as impartial as possible.
- This response will appear on User talk:CorbinSimpson as well as User talk:TheImpossibleMan. - CorbinSimpson 00:37, 30 March 2006 (UTC)
- I would very much like it if you would go over and fix any grammar and MoS problems. And no need to throw in those "bear you no ill will comment"; you haven't said anything rude, provocative, or ignorant, I can't imagine a reason to begrudge you.
One other thing, though; the Beatles main article is featured, and has been for several years. It uses several pictures that are all claimed under "fair use", including the cover of Abbey Road. Using that as an example, I don't see what's wrong with the images on the Queen page. TheImpossibleMan 00:50, 30 March 2006 (UTC)
Thank you
[edit]http://en.wiki.x.io/w/index.php?title=Symphonic_metal&diff=45875910&oldid=45874496 Thanks for your help. As you might have noticed on the talk page, things were going nowhere, and your compromise (however imperfect) was good enough for me. My goal is to help readers find quality articles which interest them after all, not engaging in endless debate w the incoherant or unbalanced ;) Cheers, Sam Spade 11:38, 30 March 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, don't worry about it. Edit wars happen everywhere on Wikipedia. The thing to remember is that there's always some sort of middle ground. Leyasu is, from experience, very knowledgeable about metal music and the modern metal scene, and she tends to have very predetermined desires for development of articles. But, just like all other Wikipedians, she's smart and eager to compromise when necessary. Anyway, glad to help. - CorbinSimpson 15:41, 30 March 2006 (UTC)
Hey, I reviewed another Queen article, Bohemian Rhapsody, and failed it again (they're really starting to hate us :P) and I actually fixed the article up stubstantially (I listed 30 reasons, and fixed 15), could you review it again, in 2 weeks? I don't want to do it because I prefer not to edit and review (it confuses me). Message me if it's okay Highway 00:37, 2 April 2006 (UTC)
Sure. It's funny; I've been working on Queen (band), ended up fixing all the quotes and a few links, rewrote some sentences and removed some parenthetical asides. It's all good. - CorbinSimpson 01:19, 2 April 2006 (UTC)

Okay, in Preferences, in the first tab, there's a field called Nickname, and below that, a checkbox marked Raw Signature. Check the checkbox, and then C'n'P this into the Nickname box:
HighwayC<span style="color:lime;">e</span>llo
What it does is take that wikitext and uses it as your new signature. You can have more complicated stuff in there, too. Look around at other's sigs and see what you like. Make sense, sort of? - CorbinSimpson 13:52, 5 April 2006 (UTC)
- I tried to make a link to my talk page, and it ended up linking to my user page.. I'll try it anyway. Can you change "lime" with the colour ref thing? Highway 14:16, 5 April 2006 (UTC)
There's a camp for this stuff? Wow. Um, anyway, not really sure what you mean. Did you want one of the sections to point to your talk, or something like that? Figure out what you want, and I'll make it when I come back into town in a few hours. - CorbinSimpson 15:01, 5 April 2006 (UTC)
- Tada! Highway Rainbow Sneakers Many thanks, Highway Rainbow Sneakers 15:55, 5 April 2006 (UTC)
Favor to ask
[edit]- Could you head to the Something discussion page; currently, it's nominated to have it's Featured article status removed. Right now, the voting is deadlocked at 6-6 (or was it 7-7?) and there hasn't been a new statement made on the page in days. Could you go there and vote? I'd perfer to see it either kept or removed, rather than have us reach no conclusion. TheImpossibleMan 22:28, 6 April 2006 (UTC)
- In the Queen article, there is this: "In England, they were named the second most popular band of all-time in a Channel 4 poll.[1]. On separate occasions, the songs "Bohemian Rhapsody"[2] and "We Are the Champions"[3] have each been voted as the world's favorite song." I think the article might be improved if we simply cut those sentences out. Who gives a damn about polls? I say we cut it, which will make the article more concise. Your opinion? TheImpossibleMan 00:45, 9 April 2006 (UTC)
- Hmm. Those two sentences are pretty wiggy. They might be accurate, but they don't really pertain to Queen in terms of introducing it as a rock band. Where else in the article might we be able to move them to? - CorbinSimpson 07:37, 9 April 2006 (UTC)
- Move 'em to the "Success" section, or delete em entirely. TheImpossibleMan 07:49, 9 April 2006 (UTC)
