WP:Short descriptions are gaining wider usage and I've found them to be particularly helpful in "See also" sections by way of the {{Annotated link}} template. However, updating lists of square-bracketed links is tedious. I put together this template in hopes of making these updates faster.

Until it gets migrated, it can be safely used from my user sandbox as shown below. As long as you remember to substitute it (use subst:) there's no need to worry about leaving references to a User: sandbox in the main article namespace - they will disappear.

@N8wilson, MichaelMaggs, and John Maynard Friedman: I think this might interest you. --N8 19:40, 12 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, that looks very interesting. I'll give it a try. MichaelMaggs (talk) 20:54, 12 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Now she tells me! :-^ Yes, that will be really useful. Now all we need is sensible length short descriptions...
Planning to make it into a bot? --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 21:48, 12 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It's hot off the press. Hope it's helpful! I actually conceptualized a bot for this originally but.... Lua made it quick (no red tape) and the more I thought about it the more I liked the idea of "real" editors having direct authorship when the tool is used. ...at least at first. Definitely won't rule out a bot after we've put it through its paces a little. --N8 22:13, 12 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The article Treaty of Accession 2011 has a See Also formatted like this

The template is able to attach ANLIs to the lines with one asterisk but not those with two. Is this a bug or a feature? --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 23:37, 5 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I notice the "Because text precedes this link " condition precludes ANLI attachment. I suggest an exception to that rule be made for a sequence of asterisks. --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 23:40, 5 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It was a bug John Maynard Friedman. And I think it's fixed now as seen at Module talk:ApplyLinkAnnotations/testcases. Thanks for pointing this out so long ago!! --N8 18:47, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
