Ralph Smith O’bré

[edit]

Created by Philafrenzy (talk) and Whispyhistory (talk). Nominated by Philafrenzy (talk) at 22:55, 4 May 2018 (UTC).

General: Article is new enough and long enough
Policy: Article is sourced, neutral, and free of copyright problems

Hook eligibility:

  • Cited: No - Sources (in article) notes that the tracheotomy tube was popular, not is popular.
  • Interesting: Yes
  • Other problems: No - Concern regarding appeal to broader audience; use of jargon (tracheotomy tube)?

QPQ: No - Nominator is Philafrenzy, whereas QPQ provided was completed by co-author Whispyhistory.
Overall: Article created 2 May 2018, nominated 4 May 2018. 2045 characters, start class. Cited and neutral. Per Earwig's Copyvio Detector, 29.1%, with no apparent copyvio upon manual inspection. Wording of hook implies that the double tracheotomy tube invented by the subject is still popular, whereas the article states that the tube "appeared to have been much used [popular] at one time," and isn't necessarily still popular today. Recommend rewording. The surgeon's invention is an interesting fact, though I'm hesitant because I'm not sure if a broad audience knows what a tracheotomy tube is. Still, it's wikilinked, so they could always find out. No picture is used (too bad we don't have a picture of an original tracheotomy tube!). QPQ performed by co-author, not nominator; is Whispyhistory willing to take over the nomination?Biochemistry🙴 01:47, 11 May 2018 (UTC)

ALT1..that the once popular double tracheotomy tube was invented by Georgian surgeon Ralph Smith O’bré?

ALT2..18th century Irish surgeon Ralph Smith O’bré invented a one time popular tracheotomy tube?

It is ok for me to have done QPQ. Whispyhistory (talk) 06:05, 11 May 2018 (UTC)

I don't think we should worry about people understanding tracheotomy tube, most people know what a tracheotomy is and can infer what a t-tube is or click through. (It's fine for co-author to have done QPQ in my experience) Philafrenzy (talk) 08:19, 11 May 2018 (UTC)
Thank you for the clarification on the QPQ! I prefer ALT3, as ALT1 and 2 imply that the device is no longer popular today (which would require separate sourcing). I agree with your logic, Philafrenzy; thank you for addressing my jargon concern. One last thing: the source uses the term "tracheotomy tube," though aren't they typically called "tracheostomy tubes"? Is this a spelling/terminology mistake in the source?―Biochemistry🙴 02:53, 12 May 2018 (UTC)
I think you are right and in fact there is an Tracheal tube which I have linked. Philafrenzy (talk) 05:57, 12 May 2018 (UTC)
I suggest keeping the WL to the tracheotomy page while keeping the wording of "tracheostomy"; currently, tracheotomy tube and tracheostomy tube redirect there (even though the term "tracheostomy tube" is preferred). The term "tracheal tube" includes endotracheal tubes, which are of a different sort. Thus:

OK. Since the hook wording is unchanged I think you can tick it if you are happy. Philafrenzy (talk) 13:08, 14 May 2018 (UTC)
Just thought I'd run it by you first! (: Thank you for your patience! All problems resolved. ALT4 Biochemistry🙴 13:14, 14 May 2018 (UTC)
