Edited "Cultivation and Uses" section

[edit]

I added the "Unsourced Section" banner to the top of this section and removed the following paragraphs:

Herbalists recommend mullein leaves as one of the safest and most useful herbal lung tonics. The leaves have an expectorant and soothing action on the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract. Take mullein for easing the symptoms of asthma, chronic bronchitis, dry coughs, and laryngitis.
Mullein is also a useful lymphatic cleanser, and you may find it effective for helping to relieve skin problems like psoriasis.
Use the flower oil in your ears for inflammation, earaches, and infections of the Eustachian tubes, inner ear, and ear canal. See your doctor or herbalist if you have an ear infection.

I removed these paragraphs for several reasons, but the main two reasons were what I saw as violations of the following two style guidelines: Avoid second-person pronouns and Avoid instructional and presumptuous language.

I left in the two paragraphs that preceded the text above because the title of the section calls for such information, and those paragraphs did't seem to me to violate the guidelines quite as flagrantly. They do, however, need citation. —CKA3KA (Skazka) (talk) 00:25, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

0.5 M ??

[edit]

What the hell is that? How much in feet? Most of us don't use the Metric system guys.

Well you should, the metric system is world wide dominant and makes a lot more sence then those ancient feet, inch an other nonrelated vage mesurements that most of the modern world stopped using after the dark ages. --69.37.84.199 (talk) 11:32, 23 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Since mullein grows in North America, I believe there is a wiki guideline stating something about using both systems (one in parentheses) so all readers can understand. .5M is a half meter, or 1.5feet. 217.166.94.1 (talk) 09:14, 21 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
um, FYI the US is the Only country that doesn't use the metric system. Since when are you guys. Most of us?? Typical ignorant American response.... — Preceding unsigned comment added by Trav1085 (talkcontribs) 18:35, 29 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm American and agree the metric system is the right one that what we should adopt.--Tomwsulcer (talk) 10:47, 7 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Leaves

[edit]

Could someone PLEASE upload a nice photo of the rosette of the common form of this plant? And an article mention of the velvety leaves, a hallmark of this plant?? Two close-up photos of the flowers aren't enough when the biennial plant is in its first, non-flowering year. The common form I'm familiar with only lived 2 years, first year as a soft rosette and second year with the stalk and flowers. Anyone with a macro lens, it would also be awesome if there was an extreme closeup of the soft leaves. (where I'm living now, there are no mullein so I cannot take such photos) 217.166.94.1 (talk) 09:14, 21 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Woolly Mulleins

[edit]

I was recently at Virginia Lakes, CA at close to 10,000' and noticed many plants that I thought were Verbascum. However the leaves were narrower than I'm used to and were NOT woolly. Any thoughts ? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tonydewey (talkcontribs) 23:05, 27 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

secondary actions of Mullein

[edit]

Historically, Indigenous people would grind Mullein into a powder and put it into a pond or lake that they knew had fish. There are four compounds in Mullein that are known to paralyze fish and cause them to float to the surface. Those compounds are: Saponins, Glycosides, Coumarin, Rotenone. It is illegal in all 50 states to put substances into a body of water to catch fish. Fishing using this technique causes deoxygenation of H2O and could upset the ecosystem. 2601:343:C200:A40:694A:53D5:FDD7:BFEB (talk) 15:51, 1 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
