Expulsion of the Jews from Portugal → Expulsion of Jews and Muslims from Portugal – It is significant that, unlike the Alhambra Decree of 1492, which expelled only Jews, the Portuguese decree of 1496 expelled Muslims also. The Spanish did not do this until 1502. Srnec (talk) 01:00, 1 November 2015 (UTC)

- Strong Support Proper name and mentioning only the Jewish expulsion in a joint expulsion is a clear violation of WP:NPOV and WP:SYSTEMICBIAS AusLondonder (talk) 09:30, 3 November 2015 (UTC)

Covert reasons underlying Manueline Jewish expulsion
[edit]The Portuguese policy shift concerning Jewish rights during king Manuel I reign is attributed by in large as a result of negotiations underlying his marriage to princess Isabella of Aragon. On both sides, by late 1400's Portugal and Spain were keen to keep the peace between themselves, as well as having each other as natural strong allies in the face of possible renewed threats from north Africa, hence the logic for such marriage. However privately, each country had other reasons for doing so. For Portugal, being a much smaller country with limited human resources when compared to Spain or Morocco, it was very important to preserve for itself, the century old overseas expansion head start, which by late 1400's was already bringing in to the nation large amounts of wealth, mainly gold from West Africa to help expanding the Portuguese Empire foundations. As part of that strategy, the Tordesillas Treaty was agreed upon. From the Spanish side, by then already a large country with a sizeable population, at the same time the crown finances were in a sorry state and all means to get money for the crown were explored to keep up debt repayment. Surviving documents show this to be the case. The popularity of king Ferdinand II and queen Isabella I (parents of king Manuel I bride to be) was largely related to the liberation of Spain from Moor domination but at the same time, it offuscated the perilous state the war campaigns left the treasury in. Since a large proportion of the debt was held by Jewish bankers and finaciers together with their network of merchants, in a move to protect the Spanish crown from bankruptcy and/or state capture by financial manouverings from the creditors. The Catholic anti Jewish sentiment through the Holy Inquisition office, in conjunction with the crown, manipulated public opinion to justify nationalizations and confiscations of Jewish held assets followed by physical expulsions. In hindsight, one can piece together a stealthy thread of self interest and promotion from the Spanish side, in designing a path for the future royal offspring on Portugal side, to coincide future socio-economic policies on a par with itself. What is known from the Portuguese side, is the fact that in Lisbon, Lagos, etc, all kinds of pretexts and excuses were found by important local Christian merchants, finaciers, shipping agents and builders, to delay and even stop implementation of the new Manueline anti Jewish policies, while Spain's fortune for the foreseeable future, changed for the better by becoming a true global superpower. In conclusion, I feel the chess moves then, ended up being more beneficial to Spain. CharlieCares (talk) 11:49, 13 May 2018 (UTC)
