I began working on this article, but stopped short after I began to anime wonder if we should merge this article with the animated series article. Any thoughts? Mikeg1179 21:48, 5 April 2007

Name change and content improvement

[edit]

Apparently there was formerly an "Animated Series" page that got merged into this one under the name "Cartoon Series", but I feel that the former title works better to cover both concepts: all cartoon series are animated, but it's pretty clear that not all animated series are cartoons. There's a difference in tone and intent between the two terms, and "animated series" is definitely the broader definition. Also, for such an important article within this project, its focus is incredibly limited - where's the mention of the international nature of most shows' production, or of anime's increase in popularity and rising influence outside of Japan, or the rapid rise of 3D computer animation? There's some serious work to be done here, it's crazy that a page for a general term encompassing so much is so short. ~e.o.t.d~ (蜻蛉の目話す貢献) 18:58, 2 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The sentence "Cartoon series either appear once a week or daily during a prescribed time slot and are usually created to be open-ended, not with a predetermined number of episodes" (emphasis added) would definitely not describe all animated series; anime series may have a definite end, and I've seen episodes of some cartoon/animated series scheduled on alternating days or some other unusual schedule, even for series with continuity between episodes. And if the topic of this article is to be broadened to include all television animation, "cartoon series" doesn't even necessarily only refer to television: Cartoon shorts originally released to theatres might have recurring characters and conceivably be part of a "series", and some have even been repackaged as television series (for example, Cartoon Network's block of old Tom and Jerry cartoons). Sounds like valid points to me. I would suggest adjusting the article definition to reflect your points. If your able to provide some outside documentation for the definition, even better, but I don't think it would necessarily be required. Barkeep Chat | $ 17:52, 17 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Name change request -> please bring this page into the 21st century

[edit]
Just because this page got merged at some point from some other obsolete pages, that is no excuse for not giving it a proper name. ;) Cartoon series [aka toon] is a restrictive term used mainly in the United States to describe made-only-for-children (Saturday morning) cartoons, which were conceived mostly in series or special TV formats. Cartoon series defines obviously only a small category of animated (TV) programs among so many others. ;-/ The broader and more accurate term [which encompasses all animated TV program (traditional animation) genres (for all audiences: small children, children, young-adult, adult) except anime (referring strictly to the Japanese genre of animated TV series, mini-series, OVAs, ONAs, specials, films)] is animated television program, to include also (usually made-for-TV) films, series, mini-series, shows, shorts, specials, one-off episodes, clips, pilots, etc, etc, etc.
Therefore I am making a formal request [admins with rights, please ;)] to change this page's title to Animated television program .
More info: here + here.
Many thanks for listening + caring. ;-)

I think the page should be called animated television series because of this - List of animated television series. - Unreal7 13:00, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
"Animated TV program" includes series, but includes also TV films, shorts, specials, etc, etc. Please see the intro of this page for a comprehensive list of TV program formats.
Ergo... proper name is Animated television program . ;-)

Cartoon seriesAnimated series – Many articles for such shows are forced to use the redirect because of the silly current name. Additionally, this name fits with List of science fiction television programs, which was mentioned by another user above. Dogmaticeclectic (talk) 18:14, 22 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I’m honestly surprised there still isn’t a page for this series. 2601:989:4384:E970:2D44:48F5:25B2:D448 (talk) 15:56, 1 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
