Goals
[edit]I'd suggest toning down the goals in the infobox. At the moment, the protests are disparate and not all of these goals are present in all protests. Thoughts? BobFromBrockley (talk) 17:42, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
- The goals match the slogans protestors are using in most of these protests. They can be clearly heard in almost every single one of them in videos from reliable international news organizations. Let us know if you have evidence contradicting this. As of now, I am gonna have to disagree with you.CatmanBw (talk) 07:58, 31 August 2023 (UTC)
WP:WEASEL
[edit]I have no like for dictatorships, whether the GAFAM sort that contribute to genocide by negligence or the Assad sort that directly commit crimes against humanity. But the adjective "regime" in the context of describing a government that "we" don't like is adding editorial opinion that is not acceptable in Wikipedia. It's clear enough that the protestors object to the government, and the human rights in Syria situation speaks for itself. See WP:WEASEL for why we can only use "regime" if e.g. it's to quote the words (if it's a valid translation) of protestors or of media. The Western mainstream media continue to publish, more or less, according to the empirically established propaganda model of their selection and presentation of reports (the model was proposed and compared to observations several decades ago) - but Wikipedia should hopefully not follow any of the five filters (to some extent, we're restricted by the "sourcing" - one of the five filters, but not as badly as the mainstream media, since we prefer peer-reviewed academic sources in the long-term, and since our sourcing is transparent). Move Request from "2023 Syrian protests" to "As-Suwayda Uprising (2023)
[edit]Due to the protests in Syrian government-held areas being concentrated in As-Suwayda. The other protests in government-held areas are very small. Also, there are media sources calling it just that. CatmanBw (talk) 00:31, 3 September 2023 (UTC)
- Oppose If the protests have spread to the rest of the country (even if they are smaller) then surely keeping Syria in the title is warranted. Secondly, changing to "uprising" is a rather significant change not supported by the sources I see; as a sample, a single source used on this page refers to this as an uprising while around 30 and counting say "protests". Yeoutie (talk) 02:56, 3 September 2023 (UTC)
- Additionally as a note, a tag has not been on the main article or anywhere else notifying users of this move request. Yeoutie (talk) 02:58, 3 September 2023 (UTC)
- The focus of the media is the uprising in Syrian government-held areas, not the areas outside of Syrian government control. And the only major protest that is going on in Syrian government-held areas is the one is Suweida. The other protests in Syrian government-held areas are miniscule (dozens of people) as opposed to the 2000 people that are currently protesting in Suweida, In addition, the civil disobedience (shutting down of shops and Baath party government offices), is only happening in Suweida. - Oppose: Suweida is the epicentre of the protests, but demonstrations are happening across Syria. Damascus, Aleppo, Tartus, Idlib, Homs, etc. all reported anti-government protests. Major protests are also occuring in Daraa province.
- Its undeniable that, as of today, protests are occuring nation-wide. Shadowwarrior8 (talk) 12:10, 3 September 2023 (UTC)
- Can you please cite references for the demonstrations that are happening outside of Suwayda in Syrian government-held territoy (other than the miniscule ones that happened in Daraa and were quickly suppressed). I am not doubting you, I just can't find anything on them. CatmanBw (talk) 12:20, 3 September 2023 (UTC)
- There are reports of anti-government protests held across the country outside of Suweida.
(Reuters, 1 September 2023)Dozens also gathered on Friday in the province of Daraa, where the 2011 protests kicked off. They carried the three-star flag emblematic of Syria's uprising, as well as signs criticising the role of Iran, a key Assad ally. Residents of other government-held parts of Syria - where restrictions are tighter - have made more discrete gestures of protest to avoid detection by government forces. In the coastal province of Tartus on Thursday, some residents held up small postcards reading "Syria belongs to us, not to the (ruling) Ba'ath party"[1]
- Maybe smaller, but its inaccurate to describe the protests as being restricted to Suwayda, when small-scale protests are clearly occuring across the country. Shadowwarrior8 (talk) 16:46, 4 September 2023 (UTC)
- I see, but this confirms that the other protests in Syrian government-held areas are very small (dozens of people). I know there are large demonstrations occurring outside of Syrian government-held areas but the media is not focusing on those because they don't have the same impact. - Oppose, as none of the sources cited in the article use the term "uprising" in reference to this. The events are almost uniformly referred to as "protests". --Grnrchst (talk) 10:41, 4 September 2023 (UTC)
- Oppose. However, I think you could make a case for "As-Suwayda Protests (2023)". Inanimatecarbonrobin (talk) 06:48, 12 September 2023 (UTC)

2023 Syrian protests → 2023 As-Suwayda protests – The protests are still overwhelmingly concentrated in As-Suwayda. You can see this by checking out all the sources related to the topic. CatmanBw (talk) 20:40, 18 September 2023 (UTC)
- Oppose: As protests are also being reported in the Daraa region.[1] (SOHR, 22 September)
- However, a better case could be made for "2023 Southern Syria protests". Shadowwarrior8 (talk) 11:22, 24 September 2023 (UTC)
- I agree. "2023 southern Syria protests" is actually a better title. CatmanBw (talk) 12:55, 24 September 2023 (UTC)

Goals
[edit]shouldn't the words establishing a "democratic , secular and civil state in syria" be added to the goals? this has been iterated by the religious leaders sheikh al hajari and al hinnawi and several demonstrators more than once , with variations of some people using the words "rational" and "humanistic" too... 147.236.105.154 (talk) 15:19, 28 September 2023 (UTC)
- Sounds right - but could you provide a good source for this wording? BobFromBrockley (talk) 16:05, 28 September 2023 (UTC)
