Nina Arianda (born September 18, 1984 as Nina Arianda Matijcio[1] in Manhattan[2]) is an American theatre and film actress. She won a Tony Award for Best Lead Actress in 2012 for Venus in Fur.
Early life and education
Arianda was born in Manhattan, New York,[3] to a Ukrainian family.[4] She grew up in Clifton, New Jersey and Heidelberg, Germany.[2] She received a Bachelors of Arts from Eugene Lang College The New School for Liberal Arts, the liberal arts college within The New School university, and a Master of Fine Arts degree from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts Graduate Acting Program in 2009.[5]
Career
Arianda made her Broadway debut in April 2011 in the lead role of Billie Dawn in the Broadway production of Born Yesterday, with James Belushi and Robert Sean Leonard.
She appeared Off-Broadway as Vanda in the comedy-drama play Venus in Fur in 2010. The play then transferred to Broadway, the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre, in early November 2011, and she received dazzling reviews.[6][7][8][9]
She has appeared in several films, including Win Win, Tower Heist, Midnight in Paris and Rob the Mob.[10]
Awards and nominations
For her performance in Born Yesterday, Arianda was nominated for a Drama League, Drama Desk Award,[11] Outer Critics Circle Award, and Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a Play.[12] She won (in a tie) the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Actress in a Play.[13]
For her off-Broadway appearance in Venus in Fur, Arianda received a 2010 Theatre World Award and a 2010 Clarence Derwent Award.[14] She also received nominations for a 2010 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Lead Actress and a 2010 Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Actress in a Play.[14] With its run on Broadway, Arianda received her second Tony Award nomination, for Best Actress in a Play[15] and, on June 10, 2012, received her first Tony Award for her portrayal of Vanda in Venus in Fur.[16]
In 2014 she starred in the Manhattan Theatre Club's production of Tales From Red Vienna.
