Publication history

[edit]

Miek first appeared in The Incredible Hulk vol. 3 #92 during the "Planet Hulk" storyline, and was created by writer Greg Pak and artist Carlo Pagulayan.

Fictional character biography

[edit]

Miek is an insectoid alien from Sakaar who is forced underground after the Imperials kill most of his hive. He is rescued during Hulk's battle with the Red King and works with him to free his brothers. During this time, he metamorphoses into a giant armored form.[1][2]

Miek later locates one of the last Queens of his race at an egg farm, but is forced to kill her after learning that she was infected by the Spikes.[volume & issue needed] He later leads the Warbound in Hulk's place while he forms an alliances with Caiera and Hiroim's people.[volume & issue needed]

After the Hulk's spaceship explodes, destroying Sakaar and killing Caiera, Miek and the Warbound accompany him in returning to Earth to seek vengeance against the Illuminati.[3] Hulk later learns that Miek had known of his ship's damaged power core, but never told him.[4] As such, he attacks Miek and imprisons him in Negative Zone Prison Alpha.[5][1][2]

Chaos War

[edit]

After Amatsu-Mikaboshi becomes the Chaos King, Miek escapes the Negative Zone and attacks Amadeus Cho and Galactus before being defeated by the former.[6]

Planet Savage

[edit]

After being exposed to Amatsu-Mikaboshi's energy, Miek becomes female and moves to the Savage Land.[1][2] After killing numerous Sakaarans, she attracts the Hulk's attention and is ultimately killed in a battle with him.[7][8][9][2]

Powers and abilities

[edit]

Miek is an insect-like alien with superhuman strength and durability, and the ability to fly.[10] As a gladiator, he developed six-limbed fighting skills, often wielding four weapons at a time to keep his opponents off-balance.[11]

Other versions

[edit]

Marvel Zombies Return

[edit]

An alternate universe variant of Miek appears in Marvel Zombies Return.[12]

What If?

[edit]
  • In the What If? issue revolving around Planet Hulk called What if Caiera the Oldstrong had survived the destruction of Sakaar instead of the Hulk?, Miek is killed when Sakaar is destroyed. His death prevents anyone from discovering the truth of Sakaar's destruction and leads to Caiera conquering Earth.[volume & issue needed]
  • Miek appears in a What If? issue revolving around "World War Hulk". In the first story, he is killed by Iron Man. In the second story, Miek's treachery is known after Thor successfully reasoned with Hulk.[volume & issue needed]

Film

[edit]

Miek appears in Planet Hulk, voiced by Sam Vincent.[14][13] This version is cowardly yet good-natured and friendly and looks up to the Hulk as a friend. As opposed to his comics counterpart, Miek becomes braver over the course of the film, single-handedly fighting and killing a traitor who was about to kill his friends.

Marvel Cinematic Universe

[edit]

A female incarnation of Miek appears in media set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). This version is initially a larva-like creature and friend of Korg's who uses a robotic exoskeleton equipped with blades.

  • Miek first appears in Thor: Ragnarok.[15][16][17][18][19][20] While being forced by the Grandmaster to fight in gladiatorial combat on the planet Sakaar, Miek and Korg meet and befriend Thor after he arrives. When Thor stages an escape, Valkyrie frees Miek, Korg, and the rest of the gladiators to start a revolution. After hijacking the Grandmaster's starship, the Statesman, the gladiators help Thor evacuate Asgard before joining him in finding a new home for the Asgardian refugees.
  • In Avengers: Endgame, five years after surviving Thanos' attack on the Statesman and the Blip off-screen during the events of Avengers: Infinity War, Miek has settled on Earth in New Asgard, Norway alongside Korg, Thor, and the refugees. Miek and Korg later help Thor, the Avengers, and their allies defeat an alternate timeline variant of Thanos.[21]
  • Alternate timeline variants of Miek appear in the Disney+ animated series What If...?.[13][22]
  • Miek makes a minor appearance in Thor: Love and Thunder, portrayed by Carly Rees and voiced by Stephen Murdoch.[23][24][25][13] As of this film, she has metamorphosed and travels in a robotic exoskeleton resembling a well-dressed woman.
