Summary

[edit]

I took this picture in 2008 of the NxStage System One cycler set up for hemodialysis outside of a dialysis unit. It is available (as of 2/2008) in the contiguous USA and can be used at home and on vacation - anywhere with a 110v electrical service. This photo shows the cycler ready to be used for an extended treatment (treatment lasting 6 to 9 hours). The dialysis cartridge is loaded, the dialyzer (artificial kidney) is visible in its holder. In addition to the cycler note there is a separate heparin infusion pump on the pole, the pole also supports 30 liters of bagged dialysate, there is a separate alarm to detect fluid leaks (the small box next to the machine on the travel case) and there is a 50' drain line to a nearby sink. The machine is sitting upon its air travel case. It and its three associated boxes will be accommodated by US airlines as a medical assistive device, they are covered under the Air Carrier Access Act of 1990.
