Eastern Europe

[edit]

Greece is on the Balkan peninsula which is in Southeastern Europe, if this is not corrected I will request deletion due to inaccuracy. Izzedine (talk) 06:09, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Eastern Europe has many definitions but the core states are mainly the East Slavic nations (Russia, Ukraine and Belarus). Some definitions of Eastern Europe include East Central Europe, the Baltic States and Southeastern Europe but without Greece because Greece is sometimes seen as a Western European country and always seen as a Southern European country.

Why do you determine that countries have to be in one category or the other. Certain countries fall in two categories, Greece is both in Southern Europe and Eastern Europe, Ireland is both in Western Europe and Northern Europe. And if you want to speak culturally (though that has nothing to do with the issue), Greek interaction with the Near East and Egypt has been equal to if not greater than with Western Europe and certainly greater than with Northern Europe. Please correct the picture. Izzedine (talk) 11:12, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
This map tends to differentiate the Eastern Europe proper from the other regions sometimes considered Eastern European.
Show me a source that says that Greece is Eastern European. Greece wasn't even under the influence of the Soviet Union.
Greece is a Southern European country which is sometimes considered to be Western European but never Eastern European.

So Greece is in Southern Europe only. No problem with the map then. Izzedine (talk) 11:29, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, Greece is no doubt Southern European but sometimes it's also considered Western European for cultural and economic reasons (among others).
Scooter20 (talk) 11:54, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
For cultural reasons, Greece is much more eastern than western (basic knowledge in cultural studies is enough to admit it)... Montessquieu (talk) 21:11, 5 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The main reason why Greece might be considered Eastern European is because of religion (Eastern Orthodox Christianity).
But Greece is a Southern European state which is sometimes considered Western-European (in a broader sense of Western Europe). Not to mention that Greece was the cradle of Western Civilization.

Another error with this map is that Europe doesn't extend east of the Ural Mountains. Not all of Russia is Europe. \//\ 22:12, 23 November 2009 (UTC)
