The thing between E1 and E2 looks like a hyphen, but I suspect it's intended to be a minus sign. Notice some differences:

E1-E2
E1E2

The first thing above is a hyphen; the second is a minus sign.

Again, the first thing is a hyphen and the second is a minus sign.

A minus sign is longer and has spaces before and after it.
