The German plan comprised an initial attack of un-precedented fury from the north and northeast against theFrench positions on the right bank of the Meuse, supple-mented by a turning movement from the east; and as soonas the first maneuver had succeeded, and the defenders ofthe east bank were retreating in disorder, choking thebridges and the war-torn streets of Verdun, a culminatingoperation on the west bank for sweeping up the wholeFrench army. Allusion has been made to the wonderful foresight withwhich the Germans, even when engaged in the mostgigantic operations, found time for the systematic prepara-tion of subsequent performances. Preparatory measuresfor the attack on Verdun, which was not launched until February 21, 1916, went back at least as far as the previousOctober, when the moral and physical training of thespecial striking force was started.
