Summary

Description

Fort Anne National Historic Site, Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia. The officers' quarters seen from afar. This is a pretty good illustration of a star fort, or trace à l'italienne, a feature of military architecture that was first innovated in Renaissance Italy, and was so ingenious that the design's usefulness continued until well after 1800 despite vast advances in military technology in the ensuing centuries. Laid out in the form of a star, hence its name, soldiers were stationed on each side of triangular ramparts that served as the star's points, and could thus attack invading enemies from every conceivable direction. Wide ditches were placed in between the several concentric defensive walls so that invaders would be exposed to enemy fire for comparatively long periods of time as they charged through.
