Translate this file This SVG file contains embedded text that can be translated into your language, using any capable SVG editor, text editor or the SVG Translate tool. For more information see: About translating SVG files.
This file is translated using SVG <switch> elements. All translations are stored in the same file! Learn more.

For most Wikipedia projects, you can embed the file normally (without a lang parameter). The Wikipedia will use its language if the SVG file supports that language. For example, the German Wikipedia will use German if the SVG file has German. To embed this file in a particular language use the lang parameter with the appropriate language code, e.g. [[File:Sunspot butterfly diagram.svg|lang=en]] for the English version. Do not specify a lang parameter if it is not needed. The parameter may prevent the use of a subsequent translation.

To translate the text into your language, you can use the SVG Translate tool. Alternatively, you can download the file to your computer, add your translations using whatever software you're familiar with, and re-upload it with the same name. You will find help in Graphics Lab if you're not sure how to do this.

Data format The source data of the chart is in the SVG image file in a clearly readable format. You see the original numbers inside of the SVG file in the form of a list such as this:
...
1995 10.06
1996 11.75
1997 12.45
...
Content of SVG To view the data download the SVG file itself. To do so right-click this link, and then choose the option to save: File:Sunspot butterfly diagram.svg. Launch any text editor. Open the downloaded SVG file with the text editor (usually; file menu, open). To see the list of data, search for the phrase id="graph1".
Edit SVG Please, do not use a special SVG editor such as Inkscape; the readability of the database would be destroyed. You can edit the SVG file with any text editor, for example; en: List of text editors. You can view the edited SVG file in various web browsers. As of 2011, all major desktop browsers, and many minor ones, have some level of SVG support. See: en: Scalable Vector Graphics#Support for SVG in web browsers. When satisfied with your edits, upload the edited SVG file with the link labeled "Upload a new version of this file".

Use of the source data

Basis is the corrected real area of a whole sunspot. E.g. this on the 1960-01-01 a value of 350 millionths of the visible Sun's hemisphere.

The position is also corrected for a better illustration. The displayed 50% latitude is not 45 but 30. The equation is

0.00456273 * (2191.67 - (90 - Abs(lat))^1.7095) * IIf(lat < 0, -1, 1)
