Founded in Utica, NY in 1953 as St. John of Rila Russian Orthodox Church, it was rededicated in 1964 as the St. John of Kronstadt Memorial Church upon the glorification in 1964 of St. John of Kronstadt, which took place simultaneously at the ROCOR Synod's Cathedral of the Sign of the Most Holy Theotokos in New York City AND at the St. John of Rila Church in Utica, NY (from 1964 the 'St. John of Kronstadt Church').
It was the first church in the world to be dedicated to St. John of Kronstadt.
