RADIO SUTCH, started as a publicity stunt.. Reg Calvert - David Sutch - Colin Dale - Brian Paull - Geoff Pussey Mew were all there at the start.. Most of the publicity shots were taken at Tower Bridge on the River Thames. Amongst the people in the publicity shots were DAVID SUTCH - COLIN DALE - BRIAN PAULL - GEOFF MEW - PAUL NICHOLAS - RON HARWOOD - PETE PHILIPS .. The station was only started after arrival on the gun-towers when a lot of equipment was carried aboard. A generator was roped up to the platform on the towers, along with many 12 volt battery's, a turn table - mikes - beds - food and water, it was all a bit Heath Robinson.. The aerial we used was only 3/5 foot long in the early days. think about this ? the gun towers made of mostly metal and concrete a great conductor! Yes, you have got it ? a giant aerial. Not one of the story's that I have ever read over the years has mentioned this fact.. Why because they hadn't got a clue how the principle worked. But because I was there, I knew. Colin Dale did 5 shows a day in the early days - Brian Paull did 4 shows - and Geoff Mew did one. David Sutch popped in and out all day long chatting to the fans on air. We read Lady Chatterleys Lover and Fanny Hill ( banned books at the time ) on air. Friday night was party night when the girls arrived on board, Colin Dale was taken of by RAF helicopter when he got sick with food poisoning and was taken to Margate Hospital, he was kept in for a week. The Royal Navy tried to get the guys off but went sailing away when they were threatened with hot chip fat. The finish came when David Sutch and Colin Dale got fed up with Radio Sutch in the end, and sailed away to better things. ( leaving Reg Calvert to run Radio City ) David went on tour to America and Colin Dale started running three dance halls. But that's another story.. www.colindaleradiosutch.com

Further to the story RADIO SUTCH was dreamed up as a publicity stunt- We all sat down to dinner at Reg Calverts pad, Clifton Hall, Rugby, England, in March 1964 - Reg, David Sutch, Colin Dale, and Brian Paull, under discussion was how can we create another big publicity stunt like the one that David Sutch had with the Profumo By-Election affair ( John Profumo was a Tory Minister ) David Sutch had stood in the By-Election for Profumo's seat after Profumo had resigned over his affair with the call girl Christine Keeler - Mandy Rice-Davis - Stephen Ward - and a Russian Spy, that particular stunt had gotten David Sutch massive publicity, so we were looking for another vehicle to maintain Davids image. Radio Caroline had just come on air using a ship to transmit from, so we had this wacky idea that we would hire a boat ( the Cornucopia ) and pretend to start a Radio Station from near Tower Bridge on the Thames. Yes it fooled the press and the TV company's - The newspapers turned up in force - The Daily M was very helpful - always gave us good coverage. There are hundreds of photo's of us guys on the Cornucopia posing with dock-workers in the back ground and the famous Thames bridge. Mean while Reg had been reading up on Maunsell Forts and had a brain wave, Keep it to yourself's he said, but Shivering Sands is going to be the home of Radio Sutch. He then contacted a guy called Fred Downs with his boat the Harvester, Could he takes us out to the Gun-Towers, Shivering Sands, Thames Estuary, England, and would he also be prepared to bring out our equipment plus food and drinking water on a regular basis. The Deal Was Done - dear old Fred earned himself a regular stipend. So on a Warm and Calm day in May 1964 of we sailed to the Gun-Towers, at Shivering Sands. That's the day that Radio Sutch went down in History, a Pirate Radio Station was born on the Towers. Yes, and all started by five guys Reg Calvert, David Sutch, Colin Dale, Brian Paull, Geoff Mew, the first people to step onto the Gun-Towers for many a long year.
