English: Arms of Pollard of Langley (in the parish of Yarnscombe, Devon). Detail from 16th century (?) stained glass fragment reset (reversed in error, shown here corrected) into top of 19th century memorial window to Eleanora Elizabeth Morrison Kirkwood (d.1861) of Yeo Vale, Alwington, Devon, in the Yeo Vale Chapel of St Andrew's Church, Alwington. The four fragments of ancient heraldic stained glass, of which this this Pollard fragment is one, may have come from the chapel which adjoined Yeo Vale House but which in the 19th century was demolished and rebuilt on a hillside near the house as a folly, now in ruins. A mediaeval stone sculpture of a lady wearing a horned head-dress, now in Alwington Church, is also believed to have come from the chapel formerly at Yeo Vale. It is not known why Pollard heraldry should be found within the parish of Alwington, or whether a connection by marriage existed at some time between a Pollard and an occupant of Yeo Vale. The arms of 4 quarters are: 1&4: Argent, a chevron sable between three escallops gules (Pollard of Way in the parish of St Giles in the Wood, Devon) 2: Gules, a crescent between three mullets argent (Hansford) 3: Argent, on a fess azure a lion passant or (Passbury [or Lovering of Weare Giffard, later of Hudscott, Chittlehampton and Countisbury, Devon]). These same quarterings survive as a 17th century relief sculpture in stone above the front door of Langley Barton.
