The text reads:

  • At the top: Wahre und Eigentliche abbildung ehe er gefangen und beschoren wurde ("Truthful protrait before he was captured and his hair was shorn.")
  • Around the portrait: Nicolaus Leuenberg de Schönholz, Bernas: Rusticorum seductorum per Helvetiam Dux. Anno 1653 ("Niklaus Leuenberger of Schönholz, Berne: Leader of the Swiss seduced peasants") Schönholz is a hamlet on the territory of the village of Rüderswil.
  • At the bottom: Niklaus Leüwenberger von Schönholz in der Vogtey Trachselwald Berner gebiets. War aller in Loblicher Eydgnoschaft wider ihre Oberkeiten aufgestandene unterthanen Obman, wie er sich schribe ist somit Oberster oder ihr Haupt; dazu erwekt im April 1653. Von seiner Oberkeit gefangen im Mayo hernacher. ("Niklaus Leuenberger of Schönholz in the Bernese district of Trachselwald. Was the leader of all the subjects in the Eidgenossenschaft who revolted against their authorities, called their colonel or head (or captain); elected in April 1653. Was captured by his (the) authorities in the following May.") The dating uses old style dates following the Julian calendar; Leuenberger was captured on June 9, 1653 new style (Gregorian calendar).
