Summary

Description
English: Elizabeth Wilson and her daughter outside the family home 'Betsland' in Glenfield Road. Historical note: Alexander and Elizabeth Wilson arrived in Birkenhead from Ayrshire, Scotland. The family came to Auckland in 1863 and Alexander worked for a few years at Waiwera but in four years was able to buy 100 acres in Birkenhead where he built a home he named Betsland after his wife. He joined another settler Henry Hawkins, in fruit growing and became one of Birkenhead's founding orchardists. The photo shows Elizabeth Wilson (seated) with one of her five daughters outside Betsland. Auckland Libraries Heritage Collections B0452
