DescriptionKing's Cross inaugural run of the 'Elizabethan' geograph-2832957-by-Ben-Brooksbank.jpg
English: Departure from King's Cross of the inaugural run of the 'Elizabethan'.
Superseding the post-war 'Non-Stop', the 'Capitals Limited' (introduced in 1949 on a schedule of 7 hr. 6 min.), on 29 June 1953, after the Queen's Coronation, the 'Non-Stop' became 'The Elizabethan' from that summer, with a schedule of 6 hr. 45 min. Here we see it leaving King's Cross on its inaugural run, with Gresley A4 4-6-2 No. 60028 'Walter K. Whigham' (built 4/37 as No. 4487 'Sea Eagle', renamed 10/47, withdrawn 12/62). As is well-known, crews on the 'Non-Stops' changed over half-way by means of the corridor-tenders provided. (On this occasion, the men also wore special badges and scrolls on their uniforms). On the left is one of the N2 class 0-6-2Ts that worked all the local trains, also much empty stock, in and out of King's Cross.
