The copyright laws in the People's Republic of China state that photographic works of natural persons whose copyright protection period expires before June 1, 2021, belong to the public domain. The photograph in question was taken in 1956, which is more than 50 years ago from 2023. Therefore, this photograph has entered the public domain in China.

However, the URAA could potentially restore copyright protection to works that had entered the public domain in the United States due to noncompliance with U.S. copyright formalities. The URAA took effect for China on January 1, 1996.

Given that the photograph was taken in 1956 and the URAA for China took effect in 1996, there is a possibility that the URAA could impact the copyright status of this photograph in the United States. If the photograph was under copyright in China on January 1, 1996, due to the URAA, its copyright might have been restored in the United States.

This image is now in the public domain in China because its term of copyright has expired there. According to copyright laws of the People's Republic of China (with legal jurisdiction in the mainland only, excluding Hong Kong and Macao) and the Republic of China (currently with jurisdiction in Taiwan, the Pescadores, Quemoy, Matsu, etc.), all photographs enter the public domain 50 years after they were first published, or if unpublished 50 years from creation, and all non-photographic works enter the public domain fifty years after the death of the creator.
