Summary

Description
English: Last calling card of Joseph Haydn carrying the first four bars of the soprano part of his 1796 four-part setting of "Der Greis", a poem by Johann Wilhelm Ludwig Gleim. The note below reads: "Heute den 1ten April verkaufte ich mein schönes Fortepiano um 200 fl" followed by the signature "Jos: Haydn" and the date line "im 78 Jahr": "Today, April 1st, I sold my beautiful piano for 200 Gulden". That date is April 1st, 1809 (Haydn's 78th year, he'd entered the day before, having just turned 77) two months before his death on May 31st.
