English: HM Steam-Corvette Racoon, 22 Guns. Illustration for The Illustrated London News, 7 February 1863. THE RACOON. THE screw-corvette Racoon, 22, of 400-horse power, recently fitted at Chatham Dockyard, and since attached to the first-class steam reserve, has been commissioned by Captain the Count Victor F. Gleichen. She is intended to convey his Royal Highness Prince Alfred, who has just passed his first examination for Lieutenant, on a lengthened cruise. The Racoon has all her guns and the principal part of her stores on board, so that no delay is likely to arise in sending her to sea as soon as the whole of her officers and crew have been appointed. She has been placed in dock for the purpose of undergoing the usual survey before being sent to sea. The following officers had been appointed to the Racoon to the 31st ult., and most of them have joined and taken up their commissions :-Lieuts. H. M. Miller, H. Campbell, and G. R. Trefusis; Master W. H. Bradley; Second Master C. W. M'Conachy; Master's-Assistants G. A. Broad and W. H. Petley; Paymaster T . Bradbridge; Assistant Paymaster C. E. James; Assistant Engineer W. L. Parnell; Clerk A. N. C. King;. Naval Cadet the Hon. W. B. Phipps; Midshipmen J. W. Ramsay, N. Byng, A. Kingscote, and A. P. Pascoe. |
